LONDON (AP) — England coach Fabio Capello says missing the World Cup will be a crushing blow for David Beckham, who ruptured his Achilles tendon while playing for AC Milan on Sunday.

"We have to wait for the results of the scan, but it looks like he is out of the World Cup," Capello said on Monday. "I spoke with him after the game on Sunday night to offer my support, as did (assistant) Franco Baldini.

"David is a great professional and has worked very hard to be ready for the World Cup, so missing it will be a big blow."

The 34-year-old Beckham was flying to Finland for an operation later Monday, but has little hope of recovering in time for the World Cup, which begins in less than three months.

Beckham was injured Sunday during Milan's 1-0 Italian league win over Chievo Verona.

With only a few minutes remaining and the score 0-0, the former England captain was by himself with the ball at his feet, shifted his weight and then reached a hand down to his left heel. Beckham then stood up and snapped his wrists like he was breaking a twig in half in a gesture to show the AC Milan bench he knew the tendon was broken.

Visibly in pain and in tears, Beckham went to the sideline for medical attention.

"I am very sad for David that he has suffered this injury," Capello said.

England's most capped outfield player had been hoping to represent his country at a fourth World Cup.

But his international career could now be over after 17 goals and 115 appearances, second in English history behind only goalkeeper Peter Shilton's 125 matches.

My internal reaction was exactly like Cheryl's above. This made me so sad, esp. since I was watching some of the game live and like, literally it was 0 - 0 the entire game... basically David wasn't even needed. And he gets an injury like that?! So depressing being that he got his loans to Milan to strengthen his form FOR the World Cup. And now those dreams are basically over. Gahhhh, this is sad... Let's hope for a speeeeeedy recovery! Beckham needs a miracle from God if he wants to play though... anything is possible through Him, so we'll see! :/
